Professor Surgeon Muhammad Kabir was born on 7th December 1935 in Peshawar. He belongs to a well known family of Awan tribe originated from Arab race. He had been associated with medical field for over 45 years.

He did his MBBS from Dow Medical College, University of Karachi in 1959 and during his house job he developed taste for General Surgery and went to UK for post Graduate training and got his FRCS from Royal College of Glasgow and Edinburgh UK in 1966.

On return from UK he opted for teaching appointments initially as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Khyber Medical College, Peshawar in 1966. He was promoted to Professor of Surgery in 1971 at the age of 36 years. He then became the Head of Surgery and Orthopedics Department till 1995.

During his carrier Dr Kabir had served on important posts as administrator of Khyber Teaching Hospital and Leady Reading Hospital. He was the secretary of health of NWFP from 1991 till 1992. He started the Surgical ICU in Khyber Teaching Hospital and as a surgeon he developed center for Laparoscopic surgery. He had written 24 original articles and research papers. He designed Kabir’s Cholecystectomy Forceps’, Circumcision Forceps’, Kabir’s Kidney Incision. Kabir’s 2.5 cm Incision for open Cholecystectomy.

He retired in December 1995 and continued his attachment to the medical field by establishing a medical and dental college. He progressed to establishment of Gandhara University despite social and political pressure.

Dr Kabir was practicing surgeon till the end of his life. He passed away at the age of 68 while on visit to London with his family after suffering heart attack. May ALLAH bless his soul.
